Cadillac celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1952. However, there was not much to celebrate as that year the models had very little new to offer aesthetically, especially in terms of bodywork. This was made up for by numerous technical innovations. First there was the increased power of the engines. Then there were the Hydro-Matic (automatic gearbox with manual control of third and fourth gears) and especially the eye-catcher ‘Power steering’.
To still arrange something special for this milestone in existence, it was hastily decided to build a prototype based on the existing series 62. This prototype grew into the basis of the ‘Cadillac Eldorado’, launched in 1953, due to its enormous success at all the world’s major motor shows. To this day, that Eldorado remains one of Cadillac’s most successful models.
The model of the ’53 Eldorado’s precursor was assembled in Antwerp and came into the possession of the Mahy family after a swap. At one point, they had rented out some of the cars for the filming of a German war film, which simulated a real Zeppelin cockpit. At the end of the filming, the cabin, which had been made to full size, had to be taken down and scrapped. When the Ghent collecting family heard this, they immediately suggested loading the thing onto their own truck. They were willing to take it away… To Ghent’s own Circus Building, where the cab was hung in the building’s dome.
Years later, the Lips family from the Netherlands came over. They too were passionate collectors, who also ran a museum in Rosmalen. After very long negotiations, a deal was struck. The cabin moved to Rosmalen, in exchange for a large number of cars the Mahy family did not yet own. That aside, you can still admire the Zeppelin cabin at the Louwman museum.

En 1952, Cadillac fêtait son 50ème anniversaire. Il n’y avait cependant pas grand-chose à célébrer. Cette année-là précisément, les modèles avaient peu de nouveautés esthétiques à proposer, surtout au niveau de la carrosserie. Cela avait été compensé par de nombreuses innovations techniques. Avec, en premier lieu, des moteurs plus puissants. Puis l’Hydro-Matic (une boîte de vitesses automatique à commande manuelle sur la troisième et la quatrième vitesse) et surtout la ‘Power steering’ mieux connue sous le nom de direction assistée.
Afin de tout de même marquer le coup pour cet anniversaire spécial, il a été décidé à la hâte de construire un prototype basé sur la série 62 existante. En raison de son énorme succès sur tous les grands salons automobiles à travers le monde, ce prototype est devenu la base de la ‘Cadillac Eldorado’, lancée en 1953. À ce jour, cette Eldorado reste l’un des modèles de Cadillac ayant eu le plus de succès.
L’exemplaire du modèle précurseur de l’Eldorado de ’53 a été assemblé à Anvers et est entré en possession de la famille Mahy après un échange. À un moment donné, celle-ci avait loué plusieurs voitures pour le tournage d’un film de guerre allemand, dans lequel était utilisée une réplique d’une cabine de pilotage d’un véritable Zeppelin. À la fin du tournage, cette cabine, qui avait été réalisée grandeur nature, allait être évacuée et envoyée à la casse. Lorsque la famille de collectionneurs gantoise a entendu cela, elle a immédiatement proposé de la charger sur son propre camion. Elle lui trouverait toujours bien une petite place… Au Cirque d’hiver à Gand, où la cabine a été accrochée à la coupole du bâtiment.
Des années plus tard, la famille Lips est venue des Pays-Bas. Cette famille de collectionneurs passionnés exploitait également un musée à Rosmalen. Après de très longues négociations, un accord a finalement été trouvé. La cabine a déménagé à Rosmalen, en échange d’un grand nombre de voitures que la famille Mahy ne possédait pas encore. Entre parenthèses, on peut encore et toujours admirer cette cabine de Zeppelin au musée Louwman.

Cadillac vierde in 1952 zijn 50ste verjaardag. Zoveel viel er evenwel niet te vieren, net dat jaar hadden de modellen esthetisch maar weinig nieuwigheden te bieden, zeker niet op het vlak van de carrosserieën. Een en ander werd goedgemaakt door tal van technische innovaties. Vooreerst was er het grotere vermogen van de motoren. Vervolgens waren er de Hydro-Matic (automatische versnellingsbak met manuele controle over de derde en vierde versnelling) en vooral dé blikvanger ‘Power steering’.
Om toch nog iets speciaals te regelen voor deze mijlpaal in het bestaan werd inderhaast beslist om op basis van de bestaande series 62 een prototype te bouwen. Dit prototype groeide door zijn enorme succes op alle belangrijke autosalons ter wereld uit tot de basis van de in 1953 gelanceerde ‘Cadillac Eldorado’. Tot op de dag van vandaag blijft die Eldorado één van Cadillacs succesrijkste modellen.
Het exemplaar van de voorloper van de Eldorado uit ‘53 werd in Antwerpen geassembleerd en kwam in het bezit van de familie Mahy na een ruil. Op een bepaald ogenblik had men enkele wagens verhuurd voor het draaien van een Duitse oorlogsfilm, waarin een heuse Zeppelin-stuurcabine werd nagebootst. Aan het einde van de opnames moest de cabine, die op ware grootte was gemaakt, worden afgevoerd en gesloopt. Toen de Gentse verzamelfamilie dit hoorde, stelde men onmiddellijk voor om het ding op de eigen camion te laden. Men zou het wel wegbrengen… Naar het eigen Circusgebouw in Gent, waar de cabine in de koepel van het gebouw werd gehangen.
Jaren later kwam de familie Lips uit Nederland over de vloer. Ook zij waren gepassioneerde verzamelaars, die bovendien eveneens een museum uitbaatten in Rosmalen. Na heel lang onderhandelen werd er een deal gesloten. De cabine verhuisde naar Rosmalen, in ruil voor een groot aantal wagens die de familie Mahy nog niet bezat. Dit nog terzijde: de Zeppelin-cabine kun je nog steeds bewonderen in het Louwman-museum.
